Context

MyPlace lets friends privately share their homes with each other — think Airbnb for people you already trust. The web app had a loyal following but was hard to use, and there was no mobile app at all for a product that’s fundamentally about being somewhere else.

I led design of the iOS app from concept to App Store.

The app

Profile, groups, feed, post view, map, and camera — the whole app on one board.
Onboarding: profile setup with Instagram import, then a photo. Two screens, no forms.
Sharing a place: camera or library, available dates on a calendar, name and location on a map. The three-step flow replaced a long web form.

Process

I designed with users throughout — three groups of five: experienced MyPlace members, casual users who had tried the web app once or twice, and people who had never heard of it. Each round of concepts went in front of all three groups.

  • 4/5 legacy users said the app was much more fun and user-friendly than the web app.
  • 4/5 casual users said they would use the mobile app more than the web app.
  • 5/5 new users enjoyed the experience.

Outcome

The app shipped to the iOS App Store with a 5-star rating and resolved the business’s core problem: the product finally lived where its users were.
